The Mission

The Society of Mining Professors/Societät der Bergbaukunde is a vibrant Society representing the global academic community and committed to make a significant contribution to the future of the minerals disciplines. The main goal of the Society is to guarantee the scientific, technical, academic and professional knowledge required to ensure a sustainable supply of minerals for mankind. The Society facilitates information exchange, research and teaching partnerships and other collaborative activities among its members.
The 2011 Annual General Meeting

The Society of Mining Professors (SOMP) will hold its 22nd Annual General Meeting on September 12-15, 2011, in Arequipa, Peru, jointly with the Iberoamerican Association of Higher Education in Mining (AIESMIN) and in conjunction with Perumin, the Peruvian Mining Convention and Exhibition.

This year, and through this joint meeting, both societies will have an opportunity to discuss the major issues impacting the sustainability of mining education institutions around the world, present ideas for enhancing educational and research programs and develop educational partnerships that can ensure the critical supply of mining professionals for the global mining industry. In addition, SOMP members will have the opportunity to participate in the technical sessions and social events organized under the Peruvian Mining Convention, and visit the convention’s Exhibition.

Future Annual General Meetings

* The 23rd Annual General Meeting in 2012 will be held in Wroclaw at the Wroclaw University of Technology, Poland and will be organized by Prof. Monika Hardygora. More details will be provided at a later date.
* The 24th Annual General Meeting in 2013 will be held in Greece organized by the Technical University of Crete under the leadership of Prof. Zach Agioutantis. This 24th AGM will be coordinated with SDIMI 2013 which will also be organized by the Technical University of Crete. More details will be provided at a later date.

The RoadMap

The Sydney 2009 Annual Meeting utilized a number of break-out sessions and devoted one and a half full days into charting a future Roadmap for the Society. It was enthusiastically re-emphasized by the participants the need for the SOMP to be a vibrant global Society, representing the majority of minerals academics... Click here for the full document.
